Nate Martinez

I have been involved in the real estate industry as a salesperson for 25 years. For the past 10 years I has been an owner of Re/Max Professionals. I lead a large team which consists of five administrative people, two people doing valuations, three unlicensed people in charge of all of the miscellaneous duties such as putting up signs, performing inspections, etc., one person in charge of short sales, one person in charge of listings and follow up and four buyer agents. Last year my team made approximately 630 transactions in the metropolitan area, which consists of about four million people.

Coaching has helped my team become more successful. Prior to being coached my market began falling dramatically. Although we remained very busy, the market had stopped and everything had changed. Business was chaotic and I experienced a feeling of uncertainty as to which way to go with my business. This was when I decided to join the coaching program here at Goodfellow Coaching and Consulting to help resolve the issues and frustrations of a changing market.

Coaching gave me someone to talk to about my frustrations. Coach Ken was able to help me work through my frustrations and come up with effective solutions to the problems I faced within my business. Coaching also provided me with alternative perspectives, suggestions and insights based on the success of other members of the real estate industry. Coaching put a spotlight on what I really needed to be working on to get my business to the next level. Coaching has given me clarity as to exactly what needs to be done on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis within my business. It has helped me realize that with a large team and such high volume of sales, there is always something that needs to be worked on and improved. Coaching has helped my team evolve as the industry evolves.

Coaching has also helped improve my personal life. With clear vision and goals for my team I now have the time to take most weekends off. I work a consistent 50 hours each week -10 hours per day Monday to Friday. Coaching keeps me accountable helping me stay on track and get everything I needs to accomplish finished during the week.

Not only does coaching keep me accountable, it has also taught me the importance of keeping my entire team accountable. I now get daily updates from my entire team, which helps me keep track of, who is on point and who needs some constructive feedback or encouragement. These daily updates have helped me manage people individually and deal with individual issues as they arise. This has given me a lot of clarity and transparency as to who is busy and productive and who is not doing enough.

Accountability is only one of the challenges I face on a day-to-day basis with such a sizeable team. Motivation is another ongoing challenge for me. In order to keep my team motivated and positive I interact with my team as often as possible to try and help them work through whatever issues they are currently facing. One thing I admit I need to improve on is the number of meetings I have with my entire team. My team went from having daily meetings to weekly meetings to now virtually no meetings at all. I recognize the need to get these meetings going again so the team can share the positive aspects of their business and their weekly sales.

Another challenge I face as both an agent and an owner is spreading myself too thin. Trying to keep up with all the different business models is a big challenge. Having set meetings with Re/Max Professionals and having a good team in place to handle the day-to-day operations of my business has been hugely beneficial. Not having a manager presently (I am the current manager) has also been a big challenge. With all of the changes to the industry and his team, I’ll admit it is all still a work in progress.

I delegates about 10% – 20% of my time as an owner. I admit the rest of my business will likely suffer a bit because there is not enough of me as I begin to look into merger options to hit my goals. I do however have a fulltime recruiter to help while I am busy with other aspects of the business.

I plan to double the size of my brokerage by this coming September. I see my independent sales team continuing to do about 600 transactions each year. I see my team working more and more in the investment working more closely with investors in the near future. I am hoping by September to be in the top 60-70 top offices in North America. We are currently number 13 in the country in terms of production per agent so he is very hopeful for the future of my team.

I want to stress the importance of having a coach through the good and the bad. It doesn’t matter if you’re in school and your coach is a teacher or a tutor, or if you’re playing baseball, you know a coach can see what’s wrong with you and help you fix it. A baseball coach, if the batter’s swinging is a little off, the coach can help them with that swing and help them focus on that swing. Same thing as a business coach, he’s looking at parts of your business that from afar somebody can see in a different, better way. You may not be able to see it. Your coach can bring to light some of your weaknesses and help you strengthen those weaknesses.

I have stayed in coaching because sometimes I am so busy I lose focus. Maintaining a high level of success is an ongoing challenge. Coaching helps me and my team stay focused and accountable which allows for my success to continue. One of the most important aspects of coaching for me is simply having someone experienced and knowledgeable outside of my business to bounce ideas off of. I see true value in having a coach.
