Real Estate Recruiting: 4 Deadly Mistakes Even the Millionaire Teams Make

April 17, 2017 by Ken Goodfellow Leave a Comment

Over the years, real estate teams across North America have come to me and asked: “Why do we fail to hire the right candidate?”

There are several reasons but the biggest problem is that recruiting is an after-thought for many real estate teams. Team leaders are usually busy with what they are doing best: selling.

But this needs to change if you really want to go from agent to CEO.

Recruiting should be at the core of your business as the idea of “Millionaire Team” certainly relies on hiring great people that will help you make millions in GCI.

Making a bad hire not only prevents your team from reaching the next, desired level but may also cost you money and time that you will not get back. So, investing some time and energy into your recruiting process is an essential step to taking your business to the next level.

Here are the costly real estate recruiting mistakes that I see teams often run into:

Mistake #1: Incomplete or no job description

The first deadly mistake real estate teams are making is having incomplete or no job description. A hasty hiring process without preparation can easily lead to a bad hire that will cost you time and money. Don’t jump ahead and put up a job posting that doesn’t clearly outline the skills and qualifications your millionaire team needs. Determine what skillsets you really need on your team and create the job description for the position you want to fill. Here are the most important components of a job description:

• Job title
• Objective of the job
• Qualifications
• Responsibilities

Mistake #2: Hiring generalists

It takes a lot time and effort to train a new hire. If you have a small business, chances are you don’t have the adequate resources to train a new hire who is not already an expert in their field.

So, search for strong candidates who have a great track record of doing what your team needs. This way, you can minimize the effort and maximize the success.

Mistake #3: Ignoring interpersonal skills

Of course, it’s extremely crucial to hire an agent with an incredible track record in sales. But is that all that matters when it comes to building and operating a successful team? Of course not.

You need someone with enthusiasm, work ethic, and great interpersonal skills who can collaborate with other team members to achieve your team’s unified goal.

This doesn’t mean you should hire someone without the necessary skills and experience. Experience and interpersonal skills are equally important. Don’t forget; most new real estate team members fail due to lack of motivation and willingness to work as a team.

Mistake #4: Hiring when in doubt

This is probably the most common mistake in real estate recruiting. There is one thing even millionaire team leaders should always remember; if you make a bad hire, your company will pay the price in the end. You will end up losing time and money with almost no gain.

You need people that will that fit into your team and improve your overall business. If you are having doubts, that means you MUST NOT hire them. Keep looking for the right person who will take your team to the next level.
